2024 MONTCO2040 Application

Recent rain events have emphasized the need to evaluate what public projects can be undertaken with the goal of mitigating the impacts of high-volume rain events that the Upper Perkiomen Valley has been experiencing with increasing frequency.

Recent bridge inspections revealed large islands of sediment that have built up naturally over decades of storms and washouts.  While the bridges are owned and maintained by the Township, the waterways below them are "Waters of the Commonwealth" and any work in them requires permitting and approvals from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.   Obtaining the required permits is not a quick or inexpensive process, so the Township has decided to begin that process while seeking out grant funds to complete a Flood Mitigation Project that would endeavor to remove the sediment buildup from under two Township Bridges to clear the channels that stormwater passes through.

The Township will be submitting a grant application to Montgomery County for MONTCO2040 grant funds for a sediment removal project that involves the Hendricks Road Bridge and Saint Pauls Church Road Bridge.    In addition to permits from DEP the Township may need to obtain temporary construction easements from adjacent property owners.    This program focuses on funding municipal projects that help implement the County's Montgomery County 2040 Comprehensive Plan goals; which include a focus area of "Adaptation and Resiliency" and goals of "Improving Stormwater management," "Supporting a Modernized Infrastructure Network through Improvements to Roads and Bridges" and "Protecting Natural Resources."

Applications are submitted by March 1, 2024, and the Township hopes to be notified by the end of June if their project is selected.  Public comments are welcomed.   The application will be discussed at the February 13, 2024 Board of Supervisors Meeting at 7:00 PM.
